Eating Mediterranean diet can protect the brain from aging, reveals a new study

Posted on 2023-05-27

According to sources, a new study has found that the benefits of eating a Mediterranean diet may include a reduced risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults.

The study, conducted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, followed 5,000 older adults over more than two decades. Participants who adhered closely to a Mediterranean-style diet consisting of plant-based foods, whole grains, fish, and poultry had a 30% lower risk of cognitive decline compared to those who did not follow the diet closely.

The study also found that those who followed the diet more strictly experienced a 35% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease specifically. The Mediterranean diet has previously been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and certain cancers, but this is one of the first studies to suggest a link with cognitive health in aging populations.

The Mediterranean diet is not a new concept and has been around for centuries, influenced by the eating habits of those living in Greece, Italy, and other Mediterranean countries. It focuses on consuming whole, unprocessed foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and lean meats, while limiting processed and sugary foods.

The study’s lead author, Martha Clare Morris, explained that the Mediterranean diet is especially beneficial because it is rich in antioxidants, which help to protect against oxidative stress that can harm brain cells. The diet also includes healthy fats, like olive oil, which can help maintain healthy brain function.

Morris also noted that the Mediterranean diet is not a “silver bullet” and cannot completely prevent cognitive decline or dementia. However, it is a natural and healthy way to reduce the risk, and she encourages those who are interested in trying the diet to start making small changes in their eating habits.

As the world’s population continues to age, finding simple and holistic ways to maintain cognitive function is becoming more important. The Mediterranean diet offers a promising avenue for promoting brain health in older adults.
