Environmental lawyer and democratic presidential candidate, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be speaking at the Bitcoin 2023 conference in Miami. Kennedy has positioned himself as one of the most prominent political champions of cryptocurrency, despite its enormous energy consumption, which is a major contributor to climate change.
Tickets for the Bitcoin 2023 conference start at $899 and the all-access VIP “Whale” pass goes for $9,999. Kennedy has been a vocal advocate for cryptocurrency, promoting it as a tool to fight repressive governments and hailing it as “a major innovation engine.” He has also echoed the libertarian views of the crypto industry, stating that “monetary freedom is as important as freedom of speech. Without it, we are slaves.”
While many policymakers have turned away from the crypto industry after a series of high-profile failures that wiped out small-time investors and led to federal fraud charges, Kennedy has positioned himself as a defender of cryptocurrencies. Though bitcoin remains both the biggest cryptocurrency and by far its biggest polluter, Kennedy defended the industry, stating that “energy consumption is a concern (though somewhat overstated), but bitcoin mining uses about the same as video games and no one is calling for a ban on those.”
Kennedy’s stance puts him at odds with most environmentalists who believe that cryptocurrencies’ enormous energy consumption is a major contributor to climate change. American crypto operations consume about as much electricity as every home computer or all the residential lighting in the United States. The White House has proposed a 30% excise tax on electricity used in crypto mining in order to make miners “pay their fair share of the costs imposed on local communities and the environment.” Kennedy opposes this tax, stating that it is a bad idea and it would hobble the crypto industry.
Kennedy’s position also makes him a controversial figure in the Democratic party. Though the bitcoin community has “a libertarian bent by nature” that may not align with most Democrats, investors suggest that embracing cryptocurrencies could endear him to the millions of devoted users of cryptocurrency. The conference will feature several other political leaders including Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and the governor of the Indonesian state of West Java.
Though cryptocurrencies have pledged to go green, the energy consumption remains one of the major concerns. However, switching to different validation methods can significantly reduce the energy consumption. For instance, Ethereum, the world’s second-biggest cryptocurrency after Bitcoin, saw energy consumption reduced by 99.9% after it switched. While several cryptocurrencies have made such strides to reduce their energy consumption, Bitcoin remains the biggest cryptocurrency with the largest environmental footprint.
In conclusion, Robert Kennedy’s position vis-a-vis the crypto industry represents a paradox that reveals that its potential to transform banking, finance and trade comes at a considerable environmental cost. At present, it is unclear how much the crypto industry can reduce its carbon footprint, but there is a rising consensus that cryptocurrencies must strive to be greener in their quest for innovation.
